Hermes Reoff Switch - Discontinued
Welcome to the Open Program Robotics Competition. One hurdle in creating a fair Open Competition requires the control of how competition matches are run. Traditionally (in similar competitions based on kits) this control is completed through a software template. In the Open Program, due to the freedom of choice regarding the microcontroller, the creation and support for all of the required software templates is not feasible. That is why the Hermes Reoff Switch is required for all competitions.
There are very few restrictions placed on the robots in the Open Program. Restrictions on total number of motors and robot size, as well as safety requirements, make sure that the competitions are compelling and safe. Restrictions on battery number and type is also required to provide some parity amongst the robots. It is through these restrictions that competition control of the robot takes place.
The Hermes Reoff Switch is a set of four modules that are inserted between the robot's batteries and the robot itself. The Hermes unit receives signals from the referee and proceeds to enforce a fair match by allowing and removing power from the robot. Every team that competes at an Open Program event is required to have a Hermes installed on their robot.
